Tennis Tryout info: NEED TO KNOW!!

Posted Date: 03/17/26 (08:36 AM)

Hello Everyone,
I hope everyone had a wonderful spring break. Tennis tryouts is around the corner and I wanted to send a "need to know" about what you need and what to expect. I have also created a "Tennis Tryout Group" in parent square that you can join for any questions and all updates.

Here are the important things you need to know:

  1. Tryout sign up: ENDs Thursday March 19th @ 11:00PM (FINAL date and time). Until this date, students may sign up either online (see the flyer attachment) or in my office (until the end of the school day on March 19th).
  2. Tryout Dates: Tryout days are Monday March 23rd to Wednesday March 25th. It is highly recommended that you make all three days.
  3. Tryout Times: Tryout times are from 7:15am to 8:30 am. We will go in at 8:30 so that students who are not a part of 1st period major sports can get dressed and get to their 1st period classes on time. We will NOT continue tryouts during the athletic class periods to ensure fair tryout times for everyone.
  4. Tryout Locations:
    1. First day of tryouts March 23rd - Everyone will need to be dropped off at the bus porch at Briscoe JH. This is so that I can get everyone checked in and ensure UIL eligibility.
    2. Tuesday March 24th & Wednesday March 25th - Everyone will meet at the Foster HS Tennis courts at  7:00am so that we can start tryouts at 7:15. DO NOT come to Briscoe. Bring all your things with you to the courts. We will walk over to Briscoe after tryouts.
  5. What You Need:

    1. UIL Eligibility: All athletes MUST be cleared in Rank One. This means all students must have submitted their physicals to the athletic trainers and has been uploaded and completed all three required documents in rank one (Bonified Residency, Consent to Treat & LCISD & UIL Forms Signature Page). If you have NOT completed this, please use this link to complete or check your child's status.
      1. Parent Rank One
    2. Dress Code: If you have Briscoe athletic wear, please wear your uniform. If not, please come wearing appropriate athletic clothing for tennis. Everyone needs to come dressed! We will not have time to get dressed before tryouts. If you are not properly dressed, you will not be able to try out for that day.
    3. What to Bring: You need to bring your own tennis racket to tryouts. All rackets should be adult size, however, the length of the handle, is based on the height of your athlete. For example, the racket should not hit the ground if you’re holding it and standing tall.
  6. What to Expect: Each athlete will have the opportunity to show all skills. Forehand, backhand, serve receive and serving are the areas that we will be scoring. First cuts will be posted on Tuesday March 24th on the "Parent Square Tennis Tryout Group" (so PLEASE JOIN). Final cuts are Wednesday March 25th, but each remaining athlete will receive a letter that will provide their team status.
    1. I will be looking for players to the following teams: 3 lines of girls and boys singles, 3 lines of girls and boys doubles and 3 lines of mix doubles.
    2. This will be a mix of 7th and 8th graders. There is no separate grade team for each. This means you very well may play against someone in another grade level.
  7. What Happens Next: If your child makes the tennis team, please be prepared to join the mandatory parent meeting on Thursday March 26th @ 5:30pm. We have a very short season and things start very quickly, this meeting is important for you to receive the information you need for the season.
  8. What to do now:
    1. Make sure your child's rank one is completed and cleared
    2. Sign up for the "Tennis Tryout Parent Square"
      1. Tennis Tryout Parent Square
    3. Practice every change you get to be ready

Thank you and I look forward to a successful season
